Review from Week 1

  • LIN 211 = basic introduction to linguistics designed for non-majors
  • Textbook = Linguistics: Why it matters by Geoffrey Pullum
  • We will use Canvas extensively
  • Echo 360 = where you can find lecture slides, keep notes, ask questions, mark slides as confusing, and participate in lecture
    • So, you must bring your device to class!
    • Make sure it is charged, you know how to use it, and you don’t use it for non-class stuff!
  • Review the syllabus and detailed schedule on Canvas for more info on expectations and requirements in the class
  • Linguistics is the study of language
    • ≠ learning many languages
    • ≠ studying a language with the goal of learning to communicate in it
    • ≠ being the grammar police
  • Scientific, systematic exploration of how language works
    • Includes the study of the structure of language (how do we make a sentence?) and the use of language (how do we speak with one another?)
    • Linguists are interested in descriptive grammar , not focused on prescriptive grammar ::: {.notes}

Can refer back to the group activity, if relevant Prescriptive rules are often trivial, historical, and absurdly motivated Often can connect to social attitudes against groups
